Villa, Pancho (Doroteo Arango) (1878–1923)

Abstract
One of the most important Mexican revolutionary leaders, Doroteo Arango was born to a sharecropping family in the Rancho de Coyotado, Durango, on June 5, 1878. As a young man he joined an outlaw band, where he developed some of the leadership attributes that would serve him in the future. After an arrest for assault, Arango was inducted into the Mexican army but deserted in 1902 and moved to the city of Parral in the state of Chihuahua. It is at this time that he discarded his name and assumed the moniker of Francisco “Pancho” Villa.
