Phytochemical Analysis and Antioxidant Activity of Ethyl Acetate Extract of Martynia annua Fruit

View through CrossRef
Phytochemical analysis and antioxidant activity of ethyl acetate extract of Martynia annua fruits. Martynia annua (M. annua) commonly used in traditional medicines for cure of inflammation, tuberculosis, skin infection, epilepsy, burns, itching and sore throat. The fruit of M. annua was extracted with ethyl acetate by soxhlet method. The fruit extract (EAE) was subjected to phytochemical analysis, thin layer chromatography and determination of antioxidant activity. Phytochemical screening and thin layer chromatography of EAE confirmed the presence of alkaloids, steroids, carbohydrates, fat, volatile oil, tannin and phenolic compound. The EAE showed dose dependent antioxidant activity in DPPH, hydrogen peroxide assay and nitric oxide assay. The total phenolic and flavonoid content was found to be about 70- 90%. It is concluded that antioxidant activity of EAE of Martynia annua fruit produced dose related effect.
