Portrait of a Sufi Saint

View through Harvard Museums
The painting depicts a Sufi Muslim saint. The green halo with golden rays emanating that surrounds his head denotes his divine status. He carries a staff in one hand and a flywhisk in the other. His turban features a large red cap, which signifies an affiliation to Shi‘i Islam and originated under the Safavids of Iran. The saint wears a richly-decorated pair of paduka, a type of Indian sandal.
