Liturgical Aesthetics of Archpriest Sergei Protopopov

The article is devoted to the analysis of the treatise “On the Artistic Element in Orthodox Church Singing: (Thoughts and Observations)” (1901) by archpriest S. Protopopov as the fi rst experience of aesthetic research of church music in the period of the Silver Age. The author examines the ontological foundations of the archpriest’s understanding of the nature of aesthetic perception and the specifi cs of sacred music (church singing). It is shown that Sergei Protopopov succeeded in substantiating the principles of the revival of canonical church singing on the basis of the laws of musical harmony of later epochs.
