The heritage of the Byzantine art in the mosaic decoration of odessa eparchy orthodox temples

The mosaics in Odessa temples by contemporary artists A. S. Charkin, A. O. Shelyuto are considered. The stylistic analysis of artists’ monumental mosaic iconography is carried out in the context of universal Christian art. The interconnection of Odessa mosaicists’ icons with sacred art of particular Byzantine periods is established. The modern technological mosaic set process peculiarities (direct and inverse methods) are elucidated; modern materials used in the mosaics of Odessa temples are distinguished. Characteristic features of A. S. Charkin and A. A. Shelyuto approach to the creation of monumental mosaic icons is revealed. The widespread use of mosaic technology in the design of Odessa eparchy temples is seen as a new wave of the development of Christian mosaic art based on Byzantine style.
