Umrao Singh Sher-Gil of Majithia tekintélyes szikh családból származott, öt
nyelven beszélt, flozófával, vallástörténettel foglalkozott, amatőr szinten jártas volt az
asztronómiában, szenvedélyesen érdekelte a fényképezés. Számos fordítása jelent meg
az East and West magazinban, amelynek szerkesztőivel mély baráti kapcsolatban állt.
Második felesége MarieAntoinette Gottesmann, Baktay Ervin nővére volt, akivel nyolc
évig Budapesten éltek. Itt születtek meg leányaik, a festőművészként híressé vált Amrita
Sher-Gil és húga, Indira. Umrao Singh Budapesten is kereste a kapcsolatot azokkal a
tudósokkal, írókkal, művészekkel, akik a Kelettel, kiváltképpen Indiával foglalkoztak,
és jelentős hatással volt sógora, Baktay Ervin India iránti elköteleződésére. Magyarul
is megtanult, Jászai Mari hatására Petőf korai költeményeiből fordításai jelentek meg
az East and West magazinban. Emellett Omar Khayyam, Háfz, Nárada, Bhartri Hari,
Muhammad Iqbal verseit fordította a magazin számára.
