The characteristics of theories and methods of active learning are given, the conditions and causes of their occurrence are described, their development is traced from a historical perspective. The development of active pedagogy is considered in the context of the confrontation between active and reproductive approaches to learning, which has taken place throughout the history of mankind. Attention is drawn to the fact that active learning has become widespread and theoretically justified only in the twentieth century, although historically it is the methods of active learning that have priority in teaching. The current state of active pedagogy and trends in its development are also considered.
