Relationship between Cephalofacial Anthropometry and Stature among Adults of Bade Tribe in Faga Town, Bade Local Government Area, Yobe State, Nigeria
View through CrossRef
Background and Aim: Cephalofacial anthropometry involves measurements of parameters on the skull and face. The dimensions of the head and face are dependent on various factors, such as geography, genetic influence, and nutrition (krogman et al., 1986). Cephalo-facial parameters are important and are used in identification of individuals, sex determination, and in classifying of races. The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between cephalofacial anthropometry and stature among adults of Faga town in Bade Local Government Area of Yobe State Nigeria.
Methodology: The study design was cross sectional. The sample size was 300 subjects comprising of (150) males and (150) females with age ranging between 18 and 45 years. Random sampling technique was used. The cephalofacial parameters and stature were measured using standard protocol. The gender difference in the directly measured parameters were determined by independent sample T-test. Pearson’s correlation was used to determine the relationship between stature and cephalofacial parameters and linear regression analysis was used to predict stature from the cephalofacial parameters.
Results: Cephalofacial parameters and stature were found to be sexually dimorphic between males and females adults of bade ethnic group, A significant sexual dimorphism were observed in stature, cephalic length, cephalic breadth, cephalic index, facial length, facial breadth, facial index (P<0.05), in all the variables that exhibited significant sexual dimorphism the males have higher values than females, With exception of cephalic index, where females exhibit high cephalic index due to more brachycephalic(short and broader) heads compared males resulting in higher cephalic index..
Conclusion: A strong correlation was found between stature and cephalofacial parameters (facial length, facial breadth, cephalic length and cephalic breadth), these correlation depicts sexual dimorphism in cephalofacial parameters and stature with significant prediction of stature from cephalofacial parameters, where cephalic length is considered as best predictor of stature in adults of bade ethnic group in Faga town, Bade LGA Yobe State, Nigeria.
