Philosophical Disputes with Lu Chiu-yüan

Abstract So far, I have situated the development of some of Chu Hsi’s ideas in the con text of discussions and debates with others, whether with a friend, like Chang Shih, or with a disciple, like Ts’ai Yiian-ting. But I have preferred to treat Chu’s thinking thematically rather than concentrate on the discussions and debates. In this chapter, however, I shall dwell on the philosophical discussions and disputes that Chu Hsi and Lu Chiu-yiian entered into on a variety of subjects and occasions. I do so because I believe Lu to be Chu’sonly philosophical equal, and also a powerful rival, among their contemporaries. An exposition of their exchanges will highlight a whole range ofissues on which they professed agree ment or disagreement.
