Porträt Jean-François Lalouette (1651-1728)

View through Europeana Collections
The paper shows a portrait of the French composer and church musician Jean-François Lalouette. According to the inscription on the pedestal, he died at the age of 77. Here, however, you can see him as a frontal half-figure portrait with wig, open jacket and a buffalo over it. In his left hand he holds a scroll that protrudes beyond the edge of the oval framed image. Jean-François Lalouette learned his trade at Jean-Baptiste Lully (BS-III 44, BS-III 656 and BS-III 707) at the French court. After a dispute with his teacher, he left the court and composed church music. From 1639 he worked as music director at the Cathedral of Rouen, from 1695 to 1697 Notre Dame de Versailles and 1697-1698 in Saint-Germain-l 'Auxerrois, until he was finally choir director of the Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral from 1700 to 1726. The effigy was made by the Paris engraver Jacques-Nicholas Tardieu (1716-1791) as a copper engraving. The template is not known. The paper was published by a Parisian colleague, the publisher Michel Odieuvre (1687-1756). Signature: Ferdinand pinx. J. Tardieu filius sculp. Caption: JEAN FR.
