The text is an exegesis of a memorandum by Milnor (published in Decision Processes) concerned with decisions in situations such that the decisions of one person do not depend upon what decisions might be taken by others (and so can be isolated). The author concludes that the search for criteria that might be of use in such games against nature has reached a cul-de-sac , but that the work of Milnor which he reviews has nevertheless been valuable in clarifying the issues. The question is not closed, and the article concludes by proposing a possible new interpretation.
