Liriodendron tulipifera pertenece a la familia de las Magnoliaceae y es conocida como tulipero. Su denomiación hace referencia a la semejanza de sus flores con los tulipanes. El género Liriodendron está formado solamente por dos especies, la americana y la china (Liriodendron chinensis), que es un árbol de pequeñas dimensiones.
Es un árbol caducifolio, de forma redondeada a piramidal, simétrico, que alcanza alturas entre los 24,4 m y 50, 0 m, y diámetros hasta 9 m cuando adultos. Su fuste es limpio y recto, con una copa abierta de ramas pequeñas. Su corteza grisácea, agrietada y gruesa en árboles adultos, mientras que en los jóvenes esta es lisa, delgada y verde oscura. Sus hojas son simples, alternas, glabras y de color verde oscuro en la cara superior; alcanzan entre 10 y 15 cm de largo, en general presentan 4 lóbulos.
