Phillips, Dewi Zephaniah

View through CrossRef
D.Z. Phillips (1934–2006) pioneered a Wittgenstein‐inspired approach to philosophy of religion that he came to call a “contemplative conception.” Accused by his critics equally of atheism, nonrealism, and fideism, Phillips rejected the standard terms of debate, prioritizing the elucidation of “possibilities of sense” over evaluating beliefs and practices in the name of a purportedly context‐independent rationality. Engaging not only with philosophy but also with theology, anthropology, literature, and film, Phillips consistently accentuated the need for attention to the particularities of diverse language‐games and forms of life as opposed to general theory‐construction.
