Beauvoir’s Ambiguity, Cinema and Feminist Phenomenology

This chapter outlines the connections between Simone de Beauvoir’s notion of ambiguity and film studies, and the relevance her conception of ambiguity holds for the book’s discussion of ‘ambiguous cinema.’ Beauvoir is specifically framed as a key figure for feminist film-phenomenology in order to contextualise the link between feminist phenomenology and film theory more broadly. The chapter also discusses the way in which Beauvoir’s notion of ambiguity will be linked to emotional experience. Joanna Hogg’s The Souvenir is used as a case study film analysis to demonstrate how Beauvoir’s philosophical concepts will be integrated throughout the book.
