Alberto Blest Gana migrante: crisis, modernidad y transformación en De Nueva York al Niágara (1867)

En este artículo propongo leer De Nueva York al Niágara (1867) —crónica escrita por el chileno Alberto Blest Gana— poniendo en perspectiva la experiencia de su autor como migrante en Estados Unidos. El texto, escrito a partir de un viaje hacia las afamadas cataratas del Niágara, ofrece un testimonio de primera mano en torno al violento encuentro entre el novelista decimonónico, proveniente de una patria periférica, y la vertiginosa modernidad de una nación poderosa y central en el escenario político mundial. Conforme a ello, esta aproximación explora tres variables abordadas por Blest Gana en su narración: género sexual, clase social y desarrollo material. La reflexión que se da a propósito de cada una de ellas será el origen de una fractura en el universo de valores tradicionales del escritor, que más tarde se cristalizará en sus novelas escritas y publicadas en París.
