A Living History (1809–39)

What were Abraham Lincoln’s earliest thoughts on the past? What did history mean to him? This chapter explores the oldest surviving writings (from the earliest surviving document in his handwriting to his address to the Young Men’s Lyceum in Springfield) along with accounts by people who knew him in his youth in order to show that Lincoln held a strong fascination and mystical attachment to the past. In his early life and political career Lincoln did no deep historical research into the past but rather explored it through what historians today term memory, both personal and collective.
