AbstractThe ancient Near Eastern nation of Assyria exhibited what one could call an oscillating character to its political history, rising and falling on a number of occasions, each time unknowingly rehearsing its final end in 612bce. From the rise of the state of Shamshi Adad I (c.1814–1781bce) to the collapse of the kingdom of Tiglath‐Pileser I (c.1115–1077bce), Assyria went through a number of periods of imperial expansion, followed by political weakness and decline.
