Sable and sable breeding in Russia. A little history and the current state of sable breeding in Russia

The importance of sable and its production, industrial production in the state structure and Russian economy is shown. Information on the resources of wild sable is given. It is noted that the hunting was of a destructive nature, which led to the almost complete destruction of the sable. Information is given about the beginning of the formation of sable breeding in captivity. The achievements of Russian scientists, zoologists, specialists who laid the foundation for the reproduction of animals in captivity, the study of their physiological functions and, ultimately, the creation of highly effective technologies, including keeping, breeding, feeding and breeding work, which made it possible to preserve one of the most valuable species of fur-bearing animals – the sable, are emphasized. Achievements in the development of cage sable breeding, the creation of new breeds of sables are noted. The dynamics of the number of sables in fur farms in Russia is given. The activities of the “International Fur Auction”, Sojuzpushnina Auction Cmpany, St. Petersburg, are indicated. The characteristics “in price terms” of sable skins presented at the auction are given.
