Bead necklace

View through Europeana Collections
The Krobo, a people in southern Ghana, make beads according to the powdered glass technique. They pour pulverized glass into clay moulds. These are round slices of about a centimetre thick, with a varying number of holes in them. A straw is inserted into each hole, so that later there will be a hole in the bead. The mould filled with powder glass is heated in an oven. Because of the relatively low temperature of the oven, the glass doesn't melt completely, which results in a grainy structure. After firing, the beads are sanded by rubbing them on a stone plate.\DescriptionBorder consists of 50 Adjagba glass beads. These beads are cylindrical in shape and rounded at the edges. They are made using the powder glass technique. The bead consists of three vertical color layers yellow-green-yellow.
