Scrubber Lining Betterment

Abstract Lining maintenance at San Miguel Electric highlighted the need for a systems approach. An approach which includes consideration of all essential parts from people to the completed work acceptance inspection. This paper is intended to provided guidance in the selection, qualification and application of corrosion resistant coatings and linings in electrical generating plants with emphasis on flue gas desulfurization (FGD) scrubber maintenance. This guidance is included here especially for those facing a lining project and asking "What’s good?" After linings of polyester flakeglass, terpolymer fluoroelastomer, and a black vinyl ester proved to be lacking in long life steel substrate corrosion protection in the San Miguel Electric scrubber outlet duct, i.e. failed to do what was expected and desired, a unique vinyl ester lining was developed at the plant site and installed. While Engineering Supervisor at San Miguel Electric, the author found that participation and contributions from the material supplier, contractor, inspector and owner are necessary for success. But what may be more important is adhesion and that the lining be holiday free. This paper is the story of the successful 1987 scrubber outlet duct vinyl ester lining installation at San Miguel Electric. This lining is also being used successfully in scrubber waste slurry thickeners and in the scrubber absorber vessel to overcoat existing flakeglass linings providing useful life extension.
