Today’s Apocalyptic Monsters

View through CrossRef
Abstract It is established in this volume that monsters populate the Bible, but where are the biblical monsters that serve an apocalyptic or revelatory purpose today? This chapter argues that they often live in the space between the readers and the biblical text. These spaces are interrogated using the characteristics of the “gutter,” the spaces between panels in a comics page. Using the comics Marked, Mary Wept Over the Feet of Jesus and Our Favorite Thing Is My Favorite Thing Is Monsters, the author shows how gutters work to show infinity, get readers into the act of “closure,” and reveal the monsters acting on other planes of existence.
