David Beck, a Dutch portrait painter, was active in Sweden in 1647-1651 as Queen Kristina’s court painter. The painting belonged to the Queen and she took it to Rome.
Oil painting on copper sheet, mounted on a boiler. A waistline, phase right, Becks type III (SPA index III, page 226 and fig.219). Loose curls around the face, the right arm lifted against the lace of life, the arm’s jewelry. Over the white dress a dark (purple?) velvet jacket with a hermelin board. Dark Bag.
Carved and gilded frame with blade and bandornamented. Gilded name plate down: “S. Bourdon.”
A tergo: Two paper patches with printed text stamped: “Sébastian Bourdon (1616-1671) Portrait de Christina de Suède. Tableau sur cuivre. Ham” (unclear) and “de séquestre Wasserman.” Chipped patch with printed text: “Registered and photographed by the Swedish Portrait Archives Nationalmuseum.” Ned is penned on the frame’s v. corner “No 2310,” in h. page “ST-11029.01/455.”
