Pouncy (d. 1799) after William Hodges (1744-1797). Plate 5 of
William Hodges 'Travels in India, during the years 1780, 1781,
1782, & 1783' published in London in 1793. Hodges stated that
the Banyan tree was 'one of the curious productions of nature which
cannot fail to excite the attention of the traveller. The branches
of this tree having shoots depending on them, and taking root,
again produce, and become the parents of the others.' The tree was
named Banyan by the Europeans in India after the Hindu traders who
sat under the trees. This view shows a tree at Bhagalpur in
Bihar.
