Esteban Salinas: Reworking Mono-epistemological Thought in the Borderlands through Local Leadership and Legacy

This article examines an ethnographic case study of Esteban Salinas, a local teacher beloved by communities across the mid-Rio Grande Valley. By reconstructing his story and critically examining his legacy, we can achieve a better understanding of the monocultural narratives imposed on the borderlands in his time and seek to challenge them through the examples and legacies of individuals like Esteban Salinas. We also seek to further add contextualization over the Western colonial institutions implemented in the 20th century in the borderlands through which we are still confined, and which require reevaluation and rework and how aspects of his legacy have been reinterpreted yet remain embraced and continued by AVE Frontera family leaders. AVE Frontera, inspired in part with his example, continues this work by cultivating family and social capital through community-based practices that unite families and educational structures. With our findings, we present theoretical underpinnings that aim to facilitate social and familial capital to bridge the divide between borderland communities and degree attainment. - Resumen Este artículo examina un estudio de caso etnográfico de Esteban Salinas, un maestro local querido en comunidades del medio Valle del Río Grande. Al reconstruir su historia y examinar críticamente su legado, podemos lograr una mejor comprensión de las narrativas monoculturales impuestas en las tierras fronterizas en su época y desafiarlas utilizando los ejemplos y legados dejados por personas como Esteban Salinas. También buscamos agregar una mayor contextualización sobre las instituciones coloniales occidentales implementadas en el siglo XX en las zonas fronterizas en las que todavía estamos confinados, y que requieren reevaluación y reelaboración. Así como parte de su legado ha sido reajustado pero es aceptado y continuado por líderes de AVE Frontera. AVE Frontera, inspirada en parte por su ejemplo, continúa esta labor cultivando el capital familiar y social a través de prácticas comunitarias que unen a las familias y las estructuras educativas. Con nuestros hallazgos, presentamos fundamentos teóricos que apuntan a facilitar el capital social y familiar para cerrar la brecha entre las comunidades fronterizas y el logro de títulos universitarios.
