Octavia Knew More: Terasem, TESCREAL, and the Embrace of Earthseed from Octavia E. Butler's Parable Series
View through CrossRef
ABSTRACT: As the #OctaviaKnew hashtag proliferated on social media, the lauding of Octavia E. Butler's Parable series spurred feminist and decolonial works concerning what humanity must learn from the novel's religion, Earthseed. At the same time, Terasem—a new-age, technology-worshipping religion borrowing the namesake of Earthseed—promised deliverance to its believers through conjectured advances in computing intelligence and space travel. This paper grapples with seemingly opposing ideologies simultaneously laying claim to the same belief system. Archival analysis of Octavia E. Butler's papers is employed to reckon with representational complexity concerning the evolution of the human, posthuman destiny, and space travel in the novels.
