Buddhist sculpture and especially the Daibutsu, the Great Buddha, is one of the most popular motifs of Japanese travel photography. Even the size of the statue must have impressed the traveler from the West: 13.35 meters measures the bronze sculpture that the then ruler Hojo Yasutoki made in the 13th century for the Kamakura 50 kilometers south of Tokyo.
