Porträt Benedetto Panfili (1653-1730)

Cardinal Benedetto Panfili is depicted on the copper engraving. He was one of the most important patrons of Handel in Rome. The cardinal also wrote the text for two of Handel’s compositions: “Il Trifono del Tempo e del Disinganno” (HWV 46a) and “Hendel, non può mia musa” (HWV 117). The portrait of the cardinal was made by the Italian engraver Johann Jacob Rubeis and Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi (1627-1691). The signature on the sheet refers to the artist who was based in Rome: "Io. Iacobi de Rubeis Formis Romae ad Templ.: S. M. de Pace cum Priu. S. Pont." The depiction of Cardinal Pamphilj is in an oval frame. He wears an unadorned robe A small hood can be seen on Pamphilj’s head. The cardinal figure shows a caption: "Benedictus S.R.E. Primus Diaconus Cardinalis Pamphilius Romanus Signaturae Gratiae Praefectus Basilicae Lateranensis Archipresbyter Creatis Die I. Septembr. M.D.C.LXXXI." Two coats of arms adorn the top left and right (on the left: Innocent XI, who raised Pamphilj to cardinal; on the right: arguably Pamphilj himself). Signature: Jo.
