Portrait of a Prince
View through Harvard Museums
Standing facing right is a male figure. He has a dark mustache and beard. The figure wears a turban of fabric with flowers and a large plume; a long, white robe (jama) decorated with flowers, an orange waist sash (patka) with gold ends that bear purple irises; and red and green boots with gold embroidery. Tucked into his waist sash is a punch-dagger (katar) with a jewel-encrusted hilt. His right hand just touches the top of the hilt. His left hand rests on the pommel of his sword (talwar), its pink sheath can be seen from behind the figure and on the other side. A red sash runs across the figure’s body. A black shield (dhal) can be seen from the front and on the other side of the figure. Based on the plume and the elaborate dress, this figure is of princely status. He stands on bright green grass dotted with small flowers and against a seafoam green sky with a high, white horizon line.
