Usnisavijaya, one of the three Long-Life Deities of longevity in Tibetan Buddhism, appears in the middle of the painting and is surrounded by one hundred smaller identical images with the usual attributes: three faces with three eyes indicating three moods (kindness, serenity and rage) and eight arms. In her hands, she is holding an image of Buddha Amitabha, a double vajra, a noose, a bow, an arrow and long-life vase containing the nectar of immortality. These thangka were commissioned in order to ensure longevity and wellbeing, and were used in visualisation, meditation and praying.
