century cinematic horror into “Secure Horror” and “Paranoid Horror.” Analysis of how the film was informed by, or has elements of, contemporary horror cinema, including the Devil movie, rural horror, slasher cinema, and yuppie horror. The representation of Robert De Niro’s antagonist as a diabolical figure, based on biblical depictions of Satan as grand corruptor, together with strong suggestions of supernatural abilities. Analysis of how John D. MacDonald’s source novel, The Executioners, and the original 1962 film are used as points of comparison and contrast within Scorsese’s film.
