Painting

View through Europeana Collections
An early copy after a colossal painting in Tintoretto in the church of S. Maria dell 'Orto in Venice. The original painting has been seen by the older research as a work of the Hungarian Tintoretto, but according to Tietze it was first executed around 1560 (Tietze 1948, p. 369.) This copy is significantly smaller than the original and it only reproduces part of it. The entire upper part in Tintoretto’s painting lacks a counterpart in the copy. The artist who executed the painting in the Hallwylska collection has the work quite independent, since in several minor details he is unaware of his model. The independence of the coffin towards the original also appears in a greater interest in lighting effects. The more even lighting in Tintoretto’s painting has in some places been replaced by a more dramatic play between light and shadow. This is clear, for example, in the group around the calf itself. The copy thus acquires a slightly baroque mark in comparison to the original. This is to say that it was carried out in the 16th century and probably in the last half of this century.
