Building Medical Capacity in India

View through CrossRef
This chapter focuses on the legacy of Ida Scudder, who was one of twelve women in Cornell Medical College's first graduating class. Scudder returned to India and started conducting her practice in Vellore, which eventually evolved into Vellore's Rural Unit for Health and Social Affairs. Moreover, Scudder started to offer medical training for Indian women at Christian Medical College (CMC) and then extended her forty-bed hospital to become CMC Vellore. The chapter mentions that Scudder saw her medical center become one of the largest in all of Asia. Scudder has been recognized in many ways during and after her lifetime, such as the Kaisar-i-Hind Medal for Public Service in India.
