BARRELS. Scaly on a small low foot edge with pressed decor in low relief. On the inside in the middle in around fields a large mussel-like lotus leaf, three lotus flower buds and smaller leaves; in the middle a wide stretched lotus flowers, leaves and other flowers. The barrel pressed in a shape with cut decor. The icing light brown gray on both sides, thin, in some places with brown spots. The bank-edge unglazed (barrel burned in up and down position). The estate is brightly browned, light, with marks after drilling on the outside. Purchased by Wilhelmina von Hallwyl, 18 December 1911, at Bukowski’s Konsthandel, Stockholm. Price: 75 Kr.
Dingporcelain had a high reputation. The best objects were selected as the emperor’s hoof and as high-ranking priests at Buddhist monasteries. The sharply cast pattern inside depicts lotus flowers, a plant closely associated
with Buddhism. Casted decor began to be produced later than carved decor on Dingporslinet. The moulded decor, together with the fact that it was possible to stack several objects on each other inside the saggers, enabled mass production.
The moulds were worn during repeated use, so this barrel seems to be an early specimen, when the decor is clearly defined. The unglazed edge was a result of burning the objects upside down when stacked in the saggers.
The edges were often provided with copper, gold or silver bands. This took place to such an extent that there was a manufacturing unit at the palace that specialised in making metal edge bands.
