Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA)

The Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA), was passed in 2003 with unanimous support from both the Senate and the House of Representatives of the 108th Congress and signed by President George W. Bush. The purpose of the PREA was to provide for the collection, analysis, and evaluation of data on the incidence and effects of prison rape in federal, state, and local institutions. The Act also provides information, resources, recommendations, and funding to protect individuals from prison rape and institutional sexual violence.
