Brunsden's Jurassic World Heritage coast, Dorset, UK tribute and account of the EGGS field excursion, 13–15 June 2025
View through CrossRef
The Engineering Group of the Geological Society (EGGS) held its annual fieldtrip to West Dorset on 13–15 June 2025. The location and itinerary were chosen in memory of the late Professor Denys Brunsden who carried out his pioneering research on this coastline from the mid-1960s and the EGGS fieldtrip to Dorset led by Denys and John Pitts back in 1972. Denys was also the visionary and leader for developing the case and application for World Heritage status for the East Devon and Dorset Jurassic Coast, which was granted by UNESCO in December 2001.
This tribute and account provides an illustrated record of the field weekend including visits to the Brunsden Memory Stone, Tout Quarry, Portland; and the classic landforms of West Dorset at West Bay, Stonebarrow Hill, Charmouth, Black Ven and Lyme Regis. The account provides a brief illustrated overview of the site setting, features of interest, topics of discussion, further reading, and the significance of Brunsden's work locally and internationally.
