Fossilizationrefers to the stagnation of second language learning in spite of propitious conditions. This entry traces the etymology of the construct from its introduction to the field of SLA to the present time. It begins with a discussion of fossilization as it was originally conceptualized by Larry Selinker in his seminal 1972 paper,Interlanguage, moves on to an overview of some early studies, most of which were attempts to identify putative causes of fossilization, continues with a contextualized synopsis of current research methods and findings, and concludes with a discussion of pedagogical implications.
