Në 17 shkurt 2019 ndërroi jetë gjuhëtari i shquar dhe albanologu më i madh amerikan Eric Hamp. Ai ishte një studiues i njohur ndërkombëtarisht në fushën e gjuhësisë krahasuese-historike, me interes të veçantë në gjuhët më pak të studiuara ku gjuha shqipe me degët e saj të diasporës arbëreshe dhe arvanitase zinte një vend të nderuar. Interesat e tij studimore shtriheshin nga indoeuropianistika, te ballkanologjia, albanologjia, keltologjia, romanistika, sllavistika, armenishtja e deri te gjuhët vendase të Amerikës. Në studimin e gjuhëve atë e shquante kërkimi në terren për të mbledhur lëndën e tyre.
