The Echoing Pan-Pacific—Henry James, Cid Corman, Lindley Williams Hubbell, and Gary Snyder

Abstract: This keynote is to elucidate a certain kind of “community” across the Pan-Pacific: Cid Corman, Lindley Williams Hubbell, and Gary Snyder shared similar modernist poetic precepts/practices and immersion in Western and Japanese cultures. They respectively enjoyed/enjoy a second life, so to speak, writing, poetry, teaching, and made their home in Kyoto, at one time—the 1950s to the present. This quite original “community” has created an interesting space involving Japanese poets (through translation), professors, and students of American/English literature and local people as well.
