Byrd Orchestrated

In modern times William Byrd’s music has been repeatedly adapted for orchestral performance, from concise string arrangements to full-throated symphonic renderings. The motivations in crafting these pieces, as well as the ideals underlying the various orchestration techniques, vary significantly across different generations, and so a closer investigation of this repertory offers important nuances to Byrd reception history. This article proposes three general periods of development in orchestrating Byrd. In the early twentieth century, making Byrd symphonic was chiefly an act of
promotion and commemoration, embodying ideals of national heritage and civic pride. Composers of the following generation tended to co-opt Byrd for more individualistic purposes, which overshadowed any sense of historical or national interest. Recent works, meanwhile, signal yet
another shift in which orchestral adaptation is motivated by direct, personal encounters with Byrd, rooted in homage yet avowedly contemporary in nature.
