IRON AGE MINIATURE OBJECT

View through Europeana Collections
A cast bronze small socketed axe, possibly of the late Bronze or early Iron Age, but more probably late Iron Age or Roman. The axe is complete, and shows no evidence of wear. The socket is sub-square in section with moulding around the opening and a loop at the top. There is some iron-like corrosion around the loop, but this may be a result of particular soil conditions that makes bronze corrosion emulate iron corrosion. The body and blade of the axe flare outward from the socket to a fan-shaped blade.Total length: 48.47mmBlade width (tip to tip): 35.69mmSocket diameter: 13.97mmSocket depth: 16.49mmWeight: 23.1g
