Gene Metcalf was a native of Wichita, but Harold Cary and Arthur Bates came to Wichita from Texas and Oklahoma respectively for employment opportunities. The search for employment that brought musicians to Wichita was one of the major findings in this study. Wichita held entry level jobs for Blacks at hotels and kitchens. These immigrants later improved their working conditions through their abilities and assertiveness. Music was a side occupation based on weekend club work. Harold Cary attended Wichita University, broadcasting on the college radio station. Through this exposure, he worked his way into performing in white clubs.
