Abstract
American wars in Iraq dominated post-Cold War international relations for almost thirty years and will continue to shape global politics for the foreseeable future. The Gulf War of 1991, the American invasion of Iraq in 2003, and the campaign against the Islamic State beginning in 2014 each had its own logic. In many ways, they were distinct conflicts. However, something is lost by looking at them in isolation. Each war was fought to finish the previous conflict. The Iraq Wars, therefore, are perhaps best understood as a chain of events, one leading to the next. They swerved in many directions but are ultimately tied together by their closely intertwined history. This book relies of American and Iraqi sources, in both English and Arabic, to tie these wars together in a short, easily digestible volume. In doing so, it draws out the underlying causes of each war as well as the continuity between them.
