Abstract: This essay identifies a picture described in The Secret Garden (1911), Frances Hodgson Burnett's famous children's novel, as Spring (1894), a painting by the celebrated Victorian artist Lawrence Alma-Tadema. It subsequently explores the relationship between Burnett and the Alma-Tadema family.
