View through CrossRef
Abstract: Gayl Jones's novella-length poem, Song for Anninho , frequently intertwines the language of the earth with the language of racialized flesh. This essay is interested in how alien intimacies mediate the relationship between black female flesh and earth flesh in Song for Anninho . Alien intimacies describe a set of relations between black life and earth life in the New World that arose from a consciousness of being alienated. By reading for alien intimacies in Song for Anninho , it becomes possible to attend to the geographically bound interactions between black female flesh and earth flesh as they create an opportunity to understand how expression determines place through and with the pressures of constraint.
