View through CrossRef
This study explores Ahmadu Bello’s philosophy of education, focusing on its pragmatic approach to national development. Despite the absence of a formally published document on his educational philosophy, his speeches, writings, and policies as Premier of Northern Nigeria reveal a coherent vision for education. Through critical and logical analysis and hermeneutical methodology, this research examines Bello’s views on education as a tool for national unity, economic progress, and social advancement. The study highlights his emphasis on practical skills, vocational training, literacy, and basic education, which aimed to make education relevant and beneficial to the local populace. The findings reveal gaps in literature on Bello’s educational philosophy, particularly in relation to its pragmatic approach to national development. This study contributes to knowledge by providing a detailed understanding of Bello’s educational thought and its relevance to contemporary educational policy debates. The research recommends a renewed focus on practical skills and vocational training in educational policy, highlighting the importance of education in promoting national unity and economic progress. The study concludes that Bello’s pragmatic approach to education remains relevant today, offering valuable insights for policymakers seeking to harness education for national development.
