The Ark of Indiana Jones and Other Cinematic Arks

View through CrossRef
Abstract Chapter 6 offers an overview of the Ark in Hollywood film. It explores how Raiders of the Lost Ark and the Indiana Jones franchise have fundamentally altered how the general public thinks about the Ark. It discusses the genre of the action film and how the Ark is reinterpreted as a “MacGuffin,” something to be chased in a film. The chapter pivots, then, to a discussion of the other cinematic genre in which the Ark has most frequently appeared: the biblical epic. The arguments made in biblical epics are examined, with an eye to understanding the messages that audiences take away about the Ark, the Bible, and society in general, when they watch these films.
