Arquitectura infraestructural : Pragmatismo en la práctica contemporánea

Esta investigación se basa en la premisa de que la infraestructura es un hecho material y conceptual de la sociedad contemporánea de finales del siglo XX. En este contexto, el proyecto arquitectónico se replantea de acuerdo a lógicas infraestructurales, trascendiendo sus dimensiones físicas y produciendo nuevos modos de pensar y producir arquitectura, sin por ello, asociarse a un programa, una escala o una forma determinada. Esto resulta en una generación de prácticas y obras de arquitectura particular, que modifica los sistemas de relación con las personas y con el contexto. La tesis propone que la introducción de la condición infraestructural en la arquitectura es consecuencia de un giro disciplinar hacia una práctica pragmática, caracterizada por la confrontación de la realidad y el distanciamiento de la teoría. Por esta razón, se encuadra y caracteriza el pragmatismo, tanto a nivel discursivo como instrumental, con la intención de revelar su relación con el pensamiento infraestructural en el proyecto arquitectónico. El objetivo principal es descubrir las lógicas infraestructurales introducidas en el proyecto arquitectónico, con el propósito de construir un catálogo de las estrategias proyectuales desarrolladas como resultado de este proceso. El análisis se centra en la producción arquitectónica entre 1990 y 2010, haciendo especial hincapié en la selección de obras construidas. El repertorio de casos es heterogéneo y sigue un criterio temático, no geográfico ni monográfico. La intención no es construir una genealogía completa, sino exponer un panorama variado de obras, las cuales pueden ser entendidas como un conjunto coherente y cohesivo a partir de una conceptualización común. Para ello, primero se genera una actualización multidisciplinar de la definición de la infraestructura. A continuación, se reconstruye el contexto disciplinar de la de la arquitectura en los noventa, caracterizado por el surgimiento del nuevo pragmatismo arquitectónico. Este trabajo previo es necesario para, en último lugar, poder interpretar y explicar los casos seleccionados, siguiendo un hilo argumentativo centrado en la condición infraestructural y la práctica pragmática. El análisis de las obras de arquitectura seleccionadas demuestra que la elaboración conceptual de la infraestructura en la arquitectura del cambio de siglo no es metafórica, sino pragmática. Como resultado, se replantean tanto el proyecto como la práctica arquitectónica, asumiendo su rol dentro de las dinámicas globales. En este contexto, la producción arquitectónica asume nuevos desafíos derivados de su integración en el paradigma relacional de la infraestructura, comprometiéndose con la dimensión social, política y económica de la arquitectura en la misma medida que con la dimensión material y experiencial. ABSTRACT This research is based upon the understanding of infrastructure as a material and conceptual fact issued from the late 20th centurys contemporary society. In this context, the architectural project is revamped following infrastructural logics, beyond its physical dimensions, and producing new ways of thinking and producing architectures, without being associated with a determined program, scale or form. This leads to a particular generation of practices and architectural works, which modifies its relations with people and context. This thesis aims at showing that the introduction of the infrastructural condition in architecture is the consequence of a disciplinary shift towards a pragmatic practice, characterized by the confrontation of reality and the split from theory. For this reason, it frames and characterizes pragmatism, both at a discursive and instrumental level, with the intention of revealing its connection with the infrastructural thought in the architectural project. The main objective is to discover the infrastructural logics introduced in the architectural project, with the purpose of building a catalog of the design strategies developed as a result of this process. This analysis focuses on the architectural production between 1990 and 2010, with a special emphasis on the selection of built works. The portfolio of case studies is heterogeneous and follows a thematic criterion, rather than a geographic or monographic one. The intention is not to build a full genealogy, but to show a varied panorama of works, which can be read as a coherent and cohesive group issued from a common conceptualization. In order to obtain it, first a multidisciplinary definition of infrastructure is generated. Second, the disciplinary context of 1990s architecture is rebuilt, characterized by the arise of a new architectural pragmatism. This knowledge is key to, lastly, be able to interpret and explain the selected cases, following a plot thread focused on the infrastructural condition and the pragmatic practice. The analysis of the selected architectural works shows that the conceptual making of the infrastructure into the architecture at the turn of the century is not metaphoric, but pragmatic. As a result, both the architectural project and practice are revamped, assuming their role within the global dynamics. In this context, the architectural production takes new challenges derived from its integration in the infrastructures global and relational paradigm, committed to the social, political and economic dimension of the architecture to the same extent as to the material and experiential dimension.
