SUMMARY. — The determining role played by Louis Agassiz in the development of palaeoichthyology as a science is analysed through Recherches sur les Poissons fossiles and Monographie des Poissons fossiles du Vieux Grès rouge. The failure of Agassiz's attempt of a reformation of the Systematics established by Cuvier is underlined while his interest for stratigraphical, palaeoclimatical, palaeogeographical and palaeoecological applications of palaeontological investigations is pointed out. Mention is also made of some aspects of the natural philosophy of Louis Agassiz.
