Minzoku

Minzokuis one of the many Japanese words coined in early modern Japan that derive from concepts that were originally western. It means an ethnic group, a nation, a race, or even a combination of all these. The word reflects the fact that ethnic, national, and racial categories vaguely overlap in the Japanese perception of themselves. It had its origin in the early modern Japanese nationalist ideology according to which kinship, religion, and race were fused with one another to produce an intensely felt collective sense of “oneness.” In contemporary Japan, the “ethnic” ethos implied in the notion ofminzokuhas not totally disappeared.
