The Effect of Multitasking on Memory Retention of University Students

Multitasking becomes increasingly common, particularly with widespread use of digital devices; its cognitive consequences on learning and memory have raised concern. This quantitative study examines the effect of multitasking on memory retention among university students using a structured questionnaire survey. A sample of 200 students was selected through stratified random sampling from various academic departments. Data were collected using a self-developed, validated questionnaire designed to assess multitasking habits and perceived memory retention in educational tasks. Descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, including correlation and regression analysis, were applied to explore the relationship between multitasking frequency and memory performance. The findings revealed a significant negative correlation between multitasking behavior and self-reported memory retention, suggesting that frequent multitasking may impair students' ability to retain information effectively. These results emphasize the need to promote focused study environments and raise awareness of the cognitive costs associated with multitasking.
